There are many toothpastes on the market that claim to whiten
teeth. In reality these toothpastes contain no active ingredients
that chemically bleach or whitens ones teeth. Most of these so called
whitening toothpastes contain abrasive particles which claim to
whiten teeth by only preventing and possibly remove stains from
the tooth surface. They do NOT bleach the teeth. These are the only
toothpastes that currently contain any peroxide based bleaching
activity: Supersmile, Rembrandt, Natural Dentist and Plus White.
The downside to any whitening type toothpaste is that for bleaching
to be effective it requires a longer tooth contact time and brushing
for approx 1-2 minutes is inadequate to achieve a significant whitening
result. We feel that the use of a peroxide based whitening toothpaste
may be beneficial for maintenance after tray bleaching.
Because whitening agents are considered cosmetic components of
toothpaste, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) provides no guidelines
for these ingredients. Therefore, any cosmetic claims such as “Whitens
teeth,” “Cleans teeth,” or “Freshens breath,” are not evaluated
by the FDA. Manufacturers often claim components of their toothpaste
to be whitening but are primarily different abrasives. Any abrasive
will remove extrinsic stains from the teeth resulting in cleaner
whiter teeth
